What to do if the other driver offers to pay medical bills

Car accidents happen all the time, and occasionally, the other driver who is clearly at fault wants to avoid getting insurance companies involved. That is why many drivers will offer you cash or a check at the scene of the accident. You may feel tempted to get a few hundred bucks, but you want to avoid taking the money at all costs.

No matter how much the other driver begs and pleads, you always want to get in touch with the police and your insurance company following an auto accident. The police need to arrive at the scene to file a report, and you should receive compensation for any injuries through an insurance claim.

You need to learn the full extent of your injuries

You may not feel any pain at the scene, but that does not mean you are safe. You always want to see a doctor following a car crash, and at this time, you do not know what injuries you sustained. The doctor may need to perform an MRI, which can cost upwards of $1,000. Combined with other tests and treatments, you may have a hefty medical bill to contend with even if you do have insurance.

The other driver may give you his or her contact information in case you need more money to pay your bills, but you have no idea how trustworthy this person is. It may be impossible to get in touch. If you delay contacting your insurance company, then it becomes extremely difficult to prove the accident even occurred. You may be on the hook for paying for car repairs and hospital bills.

There are other expenses you have not considered

To see the doctor and take your car to the shop, you may have to take time off work. With an insurance claim, you can try to receive compensation for these additional expenses. Going through the proper channels increases the likelihood of making sure you can pay for everything.
